  • This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory, located in Beltsville, MD.

    The mission of the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory is to determine principles and practices integral to the development of sustainable agricultural systems. Multi-disciplinary research investigates agro-ecological processes underlying the functioning of sustainable systems. The incumbent will expand these investigations through the use of microplots in a long-term cropping systems trial.

    This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years.

    Responsibilities

    Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

    • Collects and prepares representative samples of plant and soil from ongoing field and laboratory experiments and prepares these samples for analysis. Stays familiar with sample processing and management to insure integrity.
    • Assists in one or more phases of the cropping systems research program by performing a variety of technical duties in field and laboratory environments common to research on nutrients, crop production and carbon dynamics in agricultural systems.
    • Collects gas samples in the field and analyzing them for greenhouse gases on a gas chromatograph in the lab.
    • Troubleshoots and repairs motorized field equipment used to maintain plots and microplots and to collect and process samples.
    • Writes periodic laboratory reports, summaries, and detailed documentation describing procedures, instrument configurations, quality assurance and quality control results, and sample analytical results.

    Qualifications

    Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

    At the GS-6:

    Qualifying experience for GS-6 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting soil, plant, and gas samples in field plot research projects focused on organic and conventional crop rotations; performing analysis of collected samples; and working in computerized systems for recording, compiling and reporting research results.

    OR

    Education: successful completion of at least one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters’ or equivalent graduate degree, related degrees include Agronomy, Crop Science, and Soil Science.

    OR

    A combination of education and experience as described above.

    At the GS-07 level

    Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting soil, plant, and gas samples in field plot research projects focused on organic and conventional crop rotations; performing analysis of collected samples; working in computerized systems for recording, compiling and reporting research results; and conducting statistical analyses using modern statistical analysis programs.

    OR

    Education: successful completion of at least one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters’ or equivalent graduate degree, related degrees include Agronomy, Crop Science, and Soil Science.

    OR

    A combination of education and experience as described above.

    Special Working Conditions or Other Job Requirements: 

    Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    Must have the ability to lift 50lbs and work outside during variable weather conditions.
